Keep It Short:

The Rubbermaid Rule

(why your videos don't get views and watch time?)

Woody Allen's Hall, Winner of the best Pictures Oscars in 1978, tells the story of a complex relationship that takes place over 5 years. It's 87 min. long. That movie trailer you saw last week in the theater- the one where you said, "I hate when they show me the whole movie!" - lasts a maximum of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Your favourite, very funny Super Bowl TV spot: 30 seconds. Average time spent looking at a web page? Just 15 seconds.

Why would you think that a video about your company needs to be 10 min.?
If 2 min. of trailer can make you fill with excitement.

1. You won't expand to fill time. "Padding" is just another word for boaring. With a tight time goal, each shot you include will have to complete with every other shot. Only the strong will survive.

( When video is too long and becomes boring )

2. You are competing with universe no matter how good your videos are people will watch full video  if it is short.

3. The faster pace will keep it moving. Even if it's less entertaining fewer people will notice

4. Planning is easier. Fewer different shots = less work!

(you should have plan and constancy)

5. It's a cheaper ( if you're spending money at all, that is)  you can spend spend triple the money per min. -- may be allowing you to hire a better cast  or pay for other frills.

The only possible disadvantage to a shorter video is that it's a lot harder to make. It takes more planning and more editing. But I don't think that of as a real disadvantage. More like a "challenge"

What does Rubbermaid have to do with all this?

We have a kitchen cabinet full of rubbermaid containers that we use to store leftovers. After a few years of transferring food from the serving dish or pot to plastic containers. I've noticed that i always pull out a bigger Rubbermaid container than I actually need. Sometimes twice or three times as big! Something in my brain estimate the food volume of the leftovers as being much larger than it is.
Through careful observation of home guest doing the exact same thing. I've concluded that most brains have this odd software glitch.

For some reason, the video-estimated cells in your brain think exactly the same way No matter how long you initially think your video should be, it's probably too long to hold your audience.
